Frequently asked questions

What does this UPI ID validator check?
This tool validates the syntax and structure of a Virtual Payment Address (VPA / UPI ID) according to NPCI specifications: prefix character rules, length limits (3–50 chars), prohibition of consecutive dots, exact single '@' delimiter, and matching against official verified Indian bank and PSP handle suffixes.
Why can't a web tool check if a UPI ID is active or registered to a live bank account?
Checking whether a UPI ID is currently connected to an active bank account requires querying NPCI's private core banking directory. By RBI mandate, this API is strictly restricted to certified banks and licensed payment service providers (PSPs). Public websites do not have access to live banking servers for user security and privacy reasons.
What are the official NPCI syntax rules for a valid UPI ID?
According to NPCI specifications: the prefix must be between 3 and 50 characters; it may contain letters (a-z, A-Z), numbers (0-9), dots (.), hyphens (-), and underscores (_); it cannot begin or end with a dot; it cannot contain consecutive dots (..); and it must be followed by exactly one '@' sign and an accredited PSP bank handle.
Can a mobile phone number be used as a UPI ID?
Yes! Many payment apps default to creating a UPI ID using your 10-digit mobile number, such as 9876543210@paytm, 9876543210@ybl (PhonePe), or 9876543210@upi (BHIM).
What is the difference between a UPI ID, VPA, and UPI Number?
A UPI ID and Virtual Payment Address (VPA) are identical terms referring to your handle (e.g. user@oksbi). A UPI Number is an 8-to-10 digit numerical alias (commonly your mobile number) registered on NPCI's central mapper that routes payments to your bank without exposing an alphanumeric handle.
Are UPI IDs case-sensitive?
No. UPI IDs are case-insensitive per NPCI specifications. For example, Rahul.Sharma@OKSBI, rahul.sharma@oksbi, and RAHUL.SHARMA@OKSBI all route to the identical bank account.
What are the most common PSP bank handles in India?
Popular handles include @oksbi, @okhdfcbank, @okaxis, and @okicici for Google Pay; @ybl, @ibl, and @axl for PhonePe; @paytm for Paytm Payments Bank; @upi for BHIM NPCI; @apl for Amazon Pay; and @naviaxis for Navi.
Why did my UPI ID fail validation?
Common validation errors include: accidental spaces in the text, special characters (like !, #, $, %), consecutive periods, prefixes shorter than 3 characters, missing the @ symbol, or typing an unapproved handle suffix.
How can I safely test if someone's UPI ID is valid before sending a big payment?
Open your payment app (Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm), enter the UPI ID in 'Pay to UPI ID', and make a micro-payment of ₹1. The app will fetch and display the legal registered account holder's name from NPCI records before requesting your UPI PIN.
Is my input saved or shared with third parties?
No. The entire validation logic runs locally inside your browser using client-side JavaScript. No UPI IDs or search queries are sent to our servers or stored in any database.
